ACCC 2018: Ready set Abuja

The time is set for yet another intriguing, breathtaking, pulsating competition as clubs from countries in Africa converge to battle for the ultimate. The biggest club hockey competition rocks the continent again as the Abuja National Stadium hosts the 30th edition of the Africa Cup for Club Champions  (ACCC).

Since its inception in 1988, the ACCC has travelled across notable cities within the continent with the latest being Accra, Ghana in 2017. The competition brings together the best clubs in Africa to a single venue where the best of hockey is exhibited to the maximum. The champions and runners up in every domestic hockey league of selected countries earn an automatic qualification spot to the competition.

With its 30 years of existence, the male category of the competition has witnessed only 4 different champions with three of those clubs coming from Egypt. The only club outside Egypt to win the competition is Kenya Armed Forces doing so in the year 1998 which was played in Namibia. El Sharkia Hockey Club has won the competition a record 23 times with their latest triumph in 2017 dethroning then Champions Eastern company club who has also won it twice.

The female category which was introduced in 1996 has no different story in terms of dominance with Kenya’s Telkom Hockey Club winning the competition a record 10 times with five consecutive triumphs from 2012 – 2016. Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) the defending champions remain the only Ghanaian club in history to ever lift the ACCC trophy.

Can El Sharkia defend their title and continue their dominance or the likes of Butali Warriors, Niger Flickers, GRA or Exchequers end their reign? Are we going to see a new champion in the female category or can GRA retain the title?

As the competition comes to light again from the 15th – 22nd December, 2018, the Abuja National Stadium is the place to be.
