Eastern Region: AKSTECH, KiSHTS crowned Champions
An entertaining end it was as the curtains of the 2018 Eastern Region Zonal hockey competition were drawn down. A moment of mixed feelings as new champions were crowned; KiSHTS in the boy’s division with AKSTECH victorious in that of the girls.
The POJOSS hockey field was filled with hockey lovers and enthusiast as matches unfold in the boy’s division.
The teams took to the field to settle the quarter final pairings. In the opening game, a spirited YIKROSEC side beat WBM 3-2 on penalties with MPASS also 2-1 winners on penalties over Kukurantumi Saviour in the second game.
Defending champions Persco were however shocked in their quarterfinal game as KOTEC edged past them on penalties. KiSHTS rounded up the quarterfinal stage with a 1-0 victory over NJUASCO.
In the semifinal, KiSHTS extended their unbeaten run to four matches after beating KOTEC 2-1 on penalties. The second semifinal match witnessed an exciting duel as both MPASS and YIKROSEC thrilled spectators with exciting displays. With the deadlock not broken, penalties had to settle and it was MPASS who came out victorious with a 3-2 win.
The final was a different story altogether for MPASS who though played well within regulation time, lost on penalties. With 3 goals scored and 2 conceeded during shootouts, KiSHTS were crowned Champions.
The girl’s division lit the KSTS hockey fields with impressive displays from the quarterfinal stage through to the final. GHANASS held onto a 1-0 lead from the tenth minute till the final blast to eliminate KRISTECH and book a semifinal place. WBM followed suit in the second game as they beat Mampong Presec 3-2 this time on penalties. YIKROSEC booked a place in the semis with a 2-1 win over AMEST. Defending champions OBOSS were kicked out of the competition by AKSTECH courtesy a 13th minute strike inside the first half.
AKSTECH continued their sublime display beating GHANASS by a lone goal. WBM setup a crunchy final with AKSTECH as they put two past YIKROSEC in the other semifinal game.
Unlike last year where they lost in the final, AKSTECH stood their grounds as they clinched the ultimate. The game started with WBM dominating and creating chances but the goalkeeper of AKSTECH with a superb display ensured the game remain barren. The moment of change however arrived as AKSTECH grabbed the winner late on to be crowned Champions.
