Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) has shortlisted a 29-man squad for the 2017 African Cup of Nations Hockey Championship scheduled this August.
Two surprising names that missed the shortlist were assistant skipper of the Blacksticks – Elikem Akaba and his brother – Elorm Akaba. The two brothers were part of the squad when Ghana made their appearance in the Hockey world league Round 2 in Dakar, Bangladesh last March. Elikem also contributed their effort to the country in the AFCON Hockey Championship in 2013 and 2015.
Four surprising names that made it to the squad were Awuku Daniel (GRA Defender), Folivi Francis (Trustees defender), Appronti Sylvester (Exchequers Midfielder) and Obeng Emmanuel (Exchequers Defender)
Ghana has made 10 out of 10 appearances to AFCON Hockey Championship with 1 gold (1974) and 3 Bronze (1983, 2005, 2009). Ghana placed 4th in 2013 and 2015 AFCON as it suffered defeat in the hands of Kenya in both events.
