GRA, Police and Exchequers fire opponents for all 3 points
The Greater Accra Hockey Association League, Men’s division match which started at 6:30am prompt saw the Ghana Police team and the Legon Knights in a very interesting game.
The more experienced police side netted a loan goal in the first half when their opponents, Legon knights showed an improved performance which was admired by all. The second half saw the league title holders registering 4 more goals with just one goal being redeemed. The match ended 5-1 in favour of the Ghana Police Team.
Trustees of SSNIT locked horns with the Customs division of the Ghana Revenue Authority in the match dubbed ‘Match Of The Day’ late in the afternoon. Trustees who were disappointed in losing the league title in 2016 approached the game with a win-win mentality to canvas all the three points per the match. An improved GRA side which has struggled over the years to retain a league title, was set to confirm their agenda of qualifying for the Africa Cup for Club Championship this year.
Meanwhile, GRA beat Trustees 4-1 and 2-1 in two pre-season matches. Samuel Agbelie in an unexpected craftiness, utilized a penalty corner in the 23rd minutes to put Trustees in the lead. Rahman gave the GRA the shock of the moment in the second goal in the early minutes of the second half, thereby ringing a bell of a comfortable lead in the ears of the fans of Trustees. GRA pulled themselves together to register their first goal. A neatly converted penalty corner in the 61st minute by Ernest Opoku levelled up the score to 2 each.
The battle continued with more tensioned play from both sides. Overconfidence overriding the trustees team saw GRA not sparing an arrested opportunity in the 66th minute.
GRA, however confirmed their zeal and eagerness to be in the Africa Cup for Club champions this year. The match ended 3-2 in favor of GRA. Trustees to meet Police in a clash of the titans in match day 2.
Exchequers in the last game of the day registered five goals against Ark Men to begin the season. Exchequers, runners up of 2016’s edition made Ark Men to suffer a 5-0 defeat even though most of their opportunities weren’t utilized. Ark men promises to bounce back in their next game against Legon knights.
Reformers were on standby, and will be in action against Legon Knights in match day 2.
