The international Hockey Federation has introduced the World Pro league which will Co exist with the World Hockey League. It is to be launched January 2019.
The top nine (9) seeded male and female international teams will play each other on a home and away basis every weekend for six (6) months ( January – June 2019). At the end of the Pro league, the top four (4) teams will play in the Olympic qualifier for the Tokyo games.
The India Hockey Federation (HI) has pulled out of the FIH Pro league slated for January 2019. The league which seeks to serve a ticket for the Olympic games qualifiers is new on the FIH calender.
Unlike the male team, the eves (female team) who are now 13th in the world have a lesser chance of getting to the top four Olympic qualifier for the Tokyo games. And since they cannot present a single team, Hockey India decided to exempt both teams from the Pro league.
An HI official said instead of the Pro league, they would focus on the World Hockey League which also serves as an automatic ticket for the qualifiers and will co run along the Pro league from 2019 because both male and female teams have a better chance there.
