Nigeria Super League: Holders off to a flying start

Host and win! As Nigeria prepares to host the 2018 ACCC, the need to win the President Cup has become a necessity as it grants the sole ticket and automatic qualification to this annual continental competition.

Skills were displayed, disputes settled, talents unearthed, tactical prowess were displayed as the 2018 President Cup commenced. The National Stadium, Abuja was the venue as hockey lovers and enthusiasts trooped in.

If there is any tournament with a very competitive opening match, then such is this. Spectators were kept on their feet for hours as the matches unfolded.

Defending champions, Niger Flickers got the ball rolling as they hosted Delta Force in the first match of day one. Delta Force looked well-balanced and eager to overthrow the champions and cause an upset by winning the trophy as newcomers. Nzete Endurance, Izang Marcus and Wilson Bernard moving from Niger Flickers to Delta Force made this game a must watch as these players were tipped to lead the Force beat the Flickers.

However, the story was different after the game: players don’t win games, teamwork does and that is exactly what Niger Flickers did. The game ended with Niger Flickers 3-1 winners over Delta Force.

Kada stars engaged Stallions in the second game of the men’s division. The two gave the spectators a lot to cheer about. A very competitive game, end to end action, chances created at both ends and excellent goalkeeping to keep the scores barren. With the game settled for a draw, Kada stars broke the hearts of the Stallions and grabbed the winner.

Police Machine got the better of IGP Flickers with a 5-1 win.

River Angels beat Plateau Queens by a lone goal; the only game played in the women’s division.
