SOUTH AFRICA FALL ON MATCH DAY 10
Host nation South Africa were denied progress from Pool B. In their bid to pip fellow Africans to the qualification berth, the highest ranked team on the continent – South Africa were thrashed by the Red lions of Belgium 9-1. The defeat put Egypt into the quarter finals with South Africa facing Japan in the 9th and 10th place match. Die Homanas of Germany finished top of Pool B with a 2-0 win over Irelands Green Machine who themselves finished 3rd to ensure qualification.
In Pool A, the Red Sticks of Spain beat New Zealands black Sticks by 4-3 in what was dubbed match of the day. Already qualified, the Red Sticks knew that a loss would mean surrendering 2nd spot to New Zealand hence leaving no stone unturned. World Champions capped a fine performance beating Japan by 7-2. The kookaburras proved tough for the Samurais cementing their place as Pool winners. France secured the last qualification berth with a 4th place finish.
