Umpires course see’s light in its first phase.

The first phase of Ghana’s umpiring beginners course took stage with much expectations met by both organizers and participants. The event marked the first umpires course organized by a Ghanaian with the aim of growing umpires in Ghana.

The course, held at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey conference room last Saturday, saw Ghana’s finest FIH Umpires schooling participants in both classroom and practical field sessions. Participants were taken through the rules of the game, values of the umpires, various cards and their use, decision-making and how to take charge of the game. Participants were also given the opportunity to whistle a game to assess their classroom performance on the field.

Some participants were illuminated by the course noting that they’ve learnt a lot and wish to partake in the next phase. Others added that hockey players should take the initiative to be at such courses to better their understanding of the game.

The brain behind this initiative, Paul Salami Adimah,  noted that he was pleased with the numbers even though he expected more ladies to present. He added that the main aim of this course was to impact his knowledge of umpiring to others based on his experiences in both local and international events.

He said “The course is aimed at increasing more female umpires in the country. We will move to the second cycle institutions to form groups to train and continue what we’ve started. I wish to have added mini projects, group discussions and presentations but looking at the time and finances, it would have been impossible”.

“The lack of structures has made umpiring a challenge to involve new entrants. Ghana Hockey should take bold initiatives to come up with structures that can be used for all umpires in the regions. Large pool of umpires will be created so we don’t overuse the few we have” he addressed.

Also, he aims at extending this initiative not only to regions in Ghana but also neighbouring countries where hockey is now finding his feet.

He finally expressed admiration towards some individuals who assisted with their time and finance praising them for their effort to make this initiative come to light.
