Wesley Girls and AUGUSCO crowned champions in Zone 3.

Central Region Zone 3 inter-school hockey competition climaxed with St Augustine’s College (Augusco) and Wesley Girls High School champions in the boys and girls division respectively. The competition which was staged on the Augusco hockey pitch, had eight schools competing in both categories.

The eight schools were group into two in the boys division with host AUGUSCO, University Practice Senior High School (UPSHS), Efutu Senior High and Abakrampa Senior High in Group A. The first round of matches in that group saw AUGUSCO beat UPSHS by a lone goal with Efutu winners in their game against Abakrampa by the same scoreline. AUGUSCO stamped their authority in the group with a 2-0 win over Efutu in their second game. Abakrampa ended UPSHS tournament dreams in their clash putting two goals past them to keep their qualification hopes alive. In the final group matches, AUGUSCO made it three wins in three matches with a 3-0 win over Abakrampa while Efutu grabbed the second qualification slot with a 1-0 win over UPSHS.

In Group B, Mfantsipim School (BOTWE), Saltpond Methodist Senior High (Mehisco), Oguaa Senior High Technical School (Ostech) and Sammo Senior High were all in action. A 2-1 penalty loss to Mehisco in their opening game gave Botwe a scare in this competition with Sammo also picking a win win over Ostech on penalties. The boys from Mfantsipim School came in strong in their second game and it paid off with a 1-0 win over Ostech while Mehisco beat Sammo 2-1 on penalties. Mehisco lost their final group game to Ostech but that couldn’t prevent them from progressing to the semi final alongside BOTWE who beat Sammo by a lone goal.

In the semi-final AUGUSCO extended their unbeaten record in the competition beating Mehisco by 3-0. In the second game, BOTWE boys earned a slim 1-0 victory over Efutu to make a date with AUGUSCO in the final.

AUGUSCO crowned their tournament in grand style with a 2-1 victory in the final over BOTWE with Efutu placing third after edging past Mehisco in the 3rd place match.


In the Girls division, Group A comprised Holy Child High school, UPSHS, Efutu and Abakrampa. UPSHS beat Holy Child in the group’s opening game by 2-0 while Efutu earned a 1-0 win on penalties over Abakrampa. In the second pair of group games, Efutu deepened the woes of Holy Child by beating them 2-0 on penalties while UPSHS made it two wins in as many matches with a 1-0 win over Abakrampa. Holy Child lost their third and final game by 3-0 to Abakrampa who pipped Efutu to the qualification spot along with UPSHS who also beat Efutu 1-0.

Wesley Girls High School, Saltpond Methodist Senior High (Mehisco), Oguaa Senior High Technical School (Ostech) and Sammo Senior High made up schools in Group B. Mehisco lost their first match to Wesley Girls by a lone goal while Ostech beat Sammo on penalties. Wesley Girls won their second game with a 2-0 win over Ostech while Mehisco beat Sammo 2-0 on penalties. Wesley Girls beat Sammo by a lone goal in their final group game to qualify with a 100 percent record. The second game of the final round of matches in Group B proved tough as both Ostech and Mehisco needed wins to qualify from the group. The game ended barren and the penalty shootout favoured Ostech who came out winners and earn the last qualification spot from Group B.

In the first semi-final game, Wesley Girls beat Abakrampa by a lone goal. Ostech earned a final showdown with Wesley Girls after a 1-0 win over UPSHS on penalties.

A fierce penalty shootout win over Ostech, crowned Wesley Girls champions in the girls division whileUPSHS who had played so well in this tournament went home with the bronze medal with a 2-0 win over Abakrampa.
