World Hockey League – Johannesburg

The second Semi final of the world hockey league men and women is ongoing in South Africa. The tournament runs from 8th July – 23rd July 2017.


The men’s division comprises 10 teams in two pools A and B. Africa’s representatives Egypt and South Africa are both in pool B.

Women’s division also has 10 teams in two pools A and B

The tournament kicked start on the 9th in the mens division with France and New Zealand sharing points in a six goal thriller. Spain then went in to beat Japan by 2-1 whilst 5th ranked, Belgium thrashed 19th ranked Egypt by 10-0 with fellow Africa rep and host nation South Africa succumb to a 2-0 loss to Ireland.

Day 2 continued in the men’s division with Germany beating Egypt by 5-0 which was another cricket scoreline defeat for the Africans. World Champions – Australia went on to secure a 3-2 win over 17th ranked France. New Zealand after drawing their first game ensured that they wrapped up all points beating Japan 3-1 and top scorers so far, Belgium rounding up with a convincing 6-2 win over Ireland.


In the women’s division, Ireland and Japan kicked start sharing points in a 1-1 drawn game and Germany beating Poland by 1-0. USA beat Chile by a lone goal and host nation South Africa earning a point in a goalless drawn game with 12th ranked India.










Day 2 (two ) in the women’s division saw Argentina beat Chile by 2-0 and USA thrash the eves of India by 4-1. Germany and Ireland both earned point in a 2-2 drawn game and 2nd ranked England beating 18th ranked Poland by 2-0.
