The Australian High Commissioner ‘s residence was the location for a colorful ceremony to honor the outgoing Australian High Commissioner, H.E Andrew Barnes; by the Ghana Hockey Association, today Wednesday, July 1st, 2020, and a trophy presentation by isports360 to the winners of the Maiden Vritual Hockey League (iLeague).
The Ghana Hockey Association organized ceremony was attended by Association President Dr. Ben K.D Asante and Secretary General Rita Odei Aware, the Australian High Commissioner, H.E Andrew Barnes, as well as some GHA officials and members from some Greater Accra hockey clubs.
The Association led by the President made a presentation to the High Commissioner who had made significant contributions during his stay in Ghana to the growth of hockey. Another presentation was given to H.E Andrew Barnes by the Citizens International HC for the role he played in Ghana hockey, particularly High School Hockey.
Speaking after the presentation, H.E. Andrew Barnes expressed appreciation to the hockey fraternity for their love and support during his stay in Ghana.
“Ghana Hockey under Dr. Ben Asante enjoys great leadership and I can see a promising future for Ghana Hockey. I encourage the Hockey Fraternity to pledge its support to its administration. It’s rather unfortunate that when the pitches are built I’m not going to be available, but I hope to come back when they’re ready, “he added.
“I am very happy for the youth development especially the interschool hockey fiesta. It was a privilege to contribute in making it successful during the last two editions. It is important for Ghana to develop across board when it comes to sports hence the focus should be extended to hockey because it has the ability to help Ghana sports grow”.
“I will keep working to get the national team of Australia (Hockeyroos and Kookaburras) play a game with Ghana and also try inviting players and coaches from Ghana to visit Australia and vice versa”, he added.
“I acknowledge the Australia private sector for their role in sponsoring hockey in Ghana especially Geodrill and Africa Mining Service. I hope they will continue with the work even in my absence”.
“I’m grateful to GHA for accepting us. We had a great time especially playing hockey here in Ghana. Thank you for the gifts and gesture. Thank you everyone for making it a point to be here”, he concluded.
GHA’s Secretary General told the house of the association ‘s activities during and after Covid-19, with a spotlight on the development of the new pitches as well as next year’s Ghana hosting the continent.
